A man who died following a multi-vehicle crash near the Brynglas tunnels in March has been named as 20-year-old Samet Kaylialp from Newport.

The early-morning crash caused massive delays in and around Newport on Thursday, March 8, as the M4 was closed at the Brynglas tunnels while emergency services attended the scene.

Two other people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident caused huge disruption in and around Newport, with city bus services and bin collections thrown into chaos until the tunnels reopened at 2.10pm.

Shortly after the road was reopened, a Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "At approximately 5.10am this morning, Thursday, March 8, 2018, we received reports of a serious road traffic collision on the M4 Westbound J26.

"The incident involved multiple vehicles and a pedestrian near to the Brynglas Tunnels, Newport.

"Sadly, we can confirm the pedestrian; a man was pronounced deceased at the scene, enquiries are ongoing to establish his identity.

"Two people were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"The westbound carriageway was closed for some time whilst emergency services attended to the scene.”

On the same morning a second crash on the M4 involved four vehicles and took place at around 7.50am between J24 towards J23A eastbound.

The road was blocked whilst recovery work took place.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said there were no life threatening injuries.
