FIREFIGHTERS rescued a person trapped in a flat above a shop after a blaze broke out in Newport this morning.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 9.13am today following a blaze at the side of the former Made 4 u baguette shop on the corner of Alexandra Road and Brunel Street.

The fire is reported to have started in a doorway and crews with breathing apparatus entered the building and rescued two people and led a further two people to safety.

One person remained trapped in the building but fire crews were in contact with her via a mobile phone and were able to locate and guide her to safety.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "We dealt with a fire involving the external door area and the internal communal area. Crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and rescued two members of the public and led a further two to safety. The rescued persons were in contact with a fire operator who gave fire survival guidance and therefore location was passed to crew on scene to enable them to rescue without delay.

"A joint investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police.

"Fire service crews carried out fire safety checks in the area and they have now left the scene."

It is understood from residents in the area that gas and electricity supplies have been switched off as a precaution.
