A BRAVE toddler fighting a rare form of cancer has undergone a major operation to remove his tumour.

Jacob Jones, whose dad is from Abergavenny, has been diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma after a 14 centimetre tumour was found on his left kidney.

The two-year-old underwent surgery at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital at University Hospital of Wales on April 6 where a successful operation removed 95 per cent of the tumour.

The operation follows around seven rounds of chemotherapy since Jacob’s diagnosis in December, when doctors said he had a 34 per cent chance of survival.

Despite the challenges of the operation, due to Jacob’ tumour splitting in half, it was a success and the toddler has since returned home.

Jacob’s mother, Emma Williams, from Ebbw Vale, said: “The surgeon said it was the hardest surgery he has ever performed because the tumour has split in two.

“Ninety-five per cent of the tumour has been removed.

“If they had taken any more of the tumour off it would have killed him.

“He has pulled through it though. He is absolutely amazing, he has been so brave.”

Jacob will now only be able to see close family for 28 days due to the risk of infection to him.

He will then require another high dose of chemotherapy, before four weeks of radiotherapy.

Ms Williams added: “I am relieved the operation is over but it is just another hurdle.

“He has still got a long way to go.”

A fundraising appeal to allow Jacob to have specialist treatment in America which is not available on the NHS has raised more than £60,000.

The appeal is aiming to raise £250,000 so that Jacob can have specialist treatment known as difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), which is aimed at preventing a relapse.

Hundreds of people have donated to the appeal, which has also included holding several events and selling red car bows.

Domino’s Pizza in Abergavenny are giving away free pizzas to any fundraising events held in the area for Jacob.

Fundraisers wished to thank the pizza takeaway for the gesture.
