TRAFFIC is building up on the M4 eastbound near Newport this morning after a collision involving a car and a lorry.

The accident happened between J27 B4591 (Highcross) and J26 A4051 (Malpas Road) at around 7.30 this morning (Wednesday, April 18), where traffic is currently queuing.

A car is understood to have been involved in a collision with a lorry, which left the car off the carriageway and down a bank. Recovery of the car started at 8.30am.

Wales Highways Agency Traffic Officers are working with Gwent Police to clear the scene of the accident.

One ambulance attended the scene, but there were no injuries and emergency services have now left.

No lane closures are in place, but traffic is being held up by people slowing down to look at the accident. Westbound traffic is slow for the same reason.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "The incident is still there, and an ambulance is in attendnce along with officers from the Wales Highways Agency.

"There are no reported injuries."
