A NEWPORT MP has called for pressure to be put on HMRC to repay £10.6 million it owes to members of a employee benefits trust run by motorway services chain Roadchef.

In 2014 the High Court ruled £10.6 million paid to HMRC from proceeds of shares from the Roadchef Employees Benefit Trust in 2000 actually belonged to the trust. Four years later, HMRC is still to repay money belonging to members of the trust - including some employees at Magor Services.

And, speaking in Parliament this week, Newport East MP Jessica Morden called on chancellor Philip Hammond to take action to get the money repaid.

"The Treasury is holding on to £10 million from the Roadchef employees benefit trust following a High Court dispute," she said.

"Can ministers ensure that HMRC returns the money to the trust with interest so that the 4,000 workers and former staff, including a number of my constituents, can finally receive what is owed to them?"

Replying, the chancellor said: "It is important that HMRC deals with matters separately from ministers, but we are aware that HMRC is in discussion with the trustees in this case and we hope for a resolution soon."
