A COMMUNITY group welcomed the public to a park when they held their first community event.

The Newport Beechwood Park Community Group has 62 members in the group and nine people are on the committee.

The group held a family event at Beechwood Park with an Easter egg hunt and storytelling on April 15. The event was originally on March 31 but was cancelled due to bad weather

Kevin O’Shea set up the Beechwood Park Community Group five years ago and is the current chairman of the group.

He said: “We were disappointed when we had to cancel, but because of safety we had to cancel.

“Considering the weather this week it was a really good event. Everyone enjoyed it and it was well worth the effort.

“What we are trying to get the community to come to the park and join us. We have to pay the council for the use of the park and so we have to get donations to cover costs. We raised just under £200 which paid for the Easter eggs.

The group have plans to improve the park for the community.

Mr O’Shea said: “This was our first event as a group and this is the first year with a new committee and members. The community is the main focus for us and we want people to come and enjoy the park.”

"When the group was set up we wanted to work with the council to regenerate the park, the money we raise will help with the upkeep of the park."
