A CABINET of memorabilia celebrating City of Newport Male Choir's 75th anniversary year has been unveiled at the city's civic centre.

Mayor of Newport, Cllr David Fouweather, unveiled the display at the entrance to the civic centre which contains mementos and memorabilia of some of the places the choir have performed at in the past 75 years.

During that time the choir has visited many countries as well as different towns and cities in the UK.

They have raised thousands of pounds for worthy causes.

Cllr Allan Morris  said: "The choir is always involved in city activities and commemorations and are indeed Newport's best ambassadors."

The commemorative plate was commissioned by choir presidents Cllr Morris and commemorative plates were also given to musical director Fiona Bryan and accompanist Barbara Davies in recognition of their huge contribution to the choir's success.

A concert will take place at St Patrick's Church in Lliswerry, Newport, on April 27 to launch the anniversary celebrations.

All funds raised will go to the Newport Street Pastors.

Eric Jones, chairman of the choir, said: "It is a privilege to be chairman of the choir at any time but particularly in this, our 75th year.

"It was very nice of the mayor to allow us to put our display cabinet in the civic centre and I hope many people will be able to go and see it."

The choir first started in the war years in 1943, when members met up at a house in Corn Street, Newport.
