BABIES born across Gwent today will share their special day with the latest addition to the Royal Family.

The third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - born at 11.01am and shown to the world several hours later on the hospital steps - was very much the centre of UK media attention.

The Argus spoke to some new mums and dads at the Royal Gwent Hospital, whose new arrivals will share their April 23 birthdays with a Royal prince.

They include little Aalyrah Lyn, a daughter for Evan Cooke and Casey Edwards, who live in Cwmbran.

She is their first child and was born 17 minutes after midnight, weighing 9lbs 1oz.

While the UK media was focused on the goings-on at St Mary’s Hospital in London, Mr Cooke and Ms Edwards were busy getting to know their daughter.

“It’s an amazing feeling, and we just can’t wait to get her home,” said Mr Cooke.

Weighing in at 7lbs 15oz, Jacob Vaughan was born shortly before 1am.

He is parents Steven and Emma Vaughan’s second child after two-and-a-half year-old Olivia.

“It’s a nice coincidence,” said Mr Vaughan of Jacob’s sharing a birthday with the new prince. “And another is that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting married on our wedding anniversary.”

At the time of going to print, the new prince does not have a first name, a situation he shares with another baby boy born today at the Royal Gwent.

“We will have to think of a name quickly,” said Mrs S Khan, of Newport, whose son was born 7.20am weighing 8lbs 1oz.

“At the moment he is just known as ‘baby Khan’.”

Meanwhile, back in London, flashbulbs and TV cameras went into overdrive as The Duke and Duchess left the hospital with their third child at 6pm.

Much is being made of the fact that he was born on St George’s Day, but April 23 is also the day traditionally regarded as William Shakespeare’s birthday.
