A FORMER Wales international rugby player from Gwent was jailed for driving a lorry while more than four times over the drink-drive limit after he had downed a bottle of vodka.

Andrew Allen, who was capped for his country three times in 1990 and played second row for Newbridge, Newport and Ebbw Vale, was sent to prison for 16 weeks by Plymouth magistrates.

The 51-year-old, of Orchard Lane, Newport, was caught on a dual carriageway in Devon where police found him in a lay-by at around 3pm on Saturday.

He was driving a Tesco lorry near Chudleigh.

Magistrates were told Allen made full and frank admission to police and pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

He was breathalysed three times by officers with the highest reading being 153 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

The Newport-born Allen was also banned from driving for 164 weeks and ordered to pay costs of £115.
