A NEW 50mph speed limit is to be introduced on the stretch of the M4 passing through the Brynglas Tunnels.

The new limit between junctions 25 and 26 has been announced by the Welsh Government as part of an effort to tackle pollution.

The temporary new limit will come into force within the next two months and is being introduced following research showing a 50mph speed limit can reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions by up to 18 per cent. It is part of a new package of measures aimed at tackling pollution, including a £20 million Air Quality Fund.

The Welsh Government is also launching a consultation on introducing Clean Air Zones, where action is taken to cut pollution, such as banning the most polluting vehicles.

A new Air Quality in Wales website will also be launched, enabling people to check live air quality information for their area.

Environment minister Hannah Blythyn said: “We will encourage local authorities to introduce Clean Air Zones, where evidence suggests they are needed to reduce harmful emissions, as well as launching a new website which allows people to check the air quality in their area.

“Delivering clean air in Wales is one of my key priorities. I am committed to taking action to reduce air pollution in Wales to support a healthier future for our communities and protect our natural environment.

“I am confident the measures I am announcing today will help support the changes we need to make in Wales to deliver cleaner air."

New 50mph limits will also be introduced between junctions 41 and 42 of the M4 at Port Talbot and on the A470 between Upper Boat and Pontypridd, as well as on the A494 at Deeside and the A483 at Wrexham in north Wales.
