A UNIQUE boxing event is coming to the city to raise money for a children's charity.

The Heroes for 6 Minutes event is aimed at people with no boxing experience and gives people the opportunity to train with a professional boxing coach and then take part in a safe but competitive three round bout at a black tie event in front of their friends and family.

The event will raise money for the Armed Forces children’s charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

Created by ex-navy officer Robbie Owen in 2015, Heroes for 6 Minutes events have been held 25 events have taken place in cities across the UK with hundreds of participants all being sponsored to take to the ring.

On Saturday night, The Neon in Newport will be the host of a number of charity bouts as rookie fighters come together following eight weeks of training.

All money raised from the Newport event will be donated to Scotty’s Little Soldiers which was founded by war widow Nikki Scott in 2010.

The charity supports children across the UK who have lost a parent while serving in the British Armed Forces.

The charity was set up in memory of Nikki’s husband and father to her two children, Corporal Lee Scott, after he was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.

Boxers have been training hard at The Neon under the guidance of local boxers Adam Jarvis and Hywel Chaplain. The group have raised over £2,000 against a £3,000 target and are urging locals to come out and support them, helping to raise money for an incredible cause.

Mr Owen said: “This event is for people who have never boxed before and from all walks of life. They’re given the chance to come out to their own music, do the big ring walk and then box in front of a live audience. This really is a once in a lifetime experience.

“There is a great camaraderie between the boxers that take part and new friendships are formed – there’s a lot more to this event than just throwing punches.”

Tickets and VIP tables are still available from the Neon directly or email: kara@heroesfor6.com
