A group of young cheerleaders has won a prestigious cheerleading competition in the USA just 18 months after setting up on the site of a former factory in Gwent.

Gymfinity in Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, beat some of the best cheerleading groups in the USA on their way to winning the level two category at the US Cheer and Dance Finals in Las Vegas on Saturday (May 12).

The group is made up of athletes aged eight to 14 from across the South Wales valleys. They trained twice in the USA before the big competition, and came back home with coveted white winners jackets as well as a very big trophy.

A travelling fan club of 80 family and friends travelled to watch them win big in Las Vegas.

Coaches Zoe Reed and Paul Reed have thanked everyone who helped fundraise for kit and expenses this year, and said the group are "still on cloud nine" after their big win,

Ms Read said: “We could not be prouder of what our athletes have achieved!

"Travelling to the USA to compete is a massive experience for any child and to go and win is what dreams are made of. Our athletes work so hard and hard work pays off.

"We would like to thank our amazing parents who support our athletes week in week out to make this possible.

Mr Reed added: "The support we have had from the community back home has been overwhelming and we would like to thank each and every person who has sent good luck and congratulations messages.

"Gymfinity has not been open for 2 years yet and the achievements of our children from the valleys has been inspirational. It’s safe to say Gymfinity is on the map.”

Gymfinity qualified for the US Finals by becoming National Champions at the Echo Arena in Liverpool last year. They remain unbeaten in the UK.
