A COMPETITION to crown Pill Carnival Queen 2018 will be held on the weekend.

The biggest annual carnival in Gwent will hit the streets of the city once again on August Bank Holiday Monday.

But before that, the carnival queen will be crowned at Pill Harriers Club, in Courtybella Terrace, on Sunday.

Entrants between the age of 5-16 years, from anywhere in Newport, are welcome to compete for the roles of carnival queen, five flower girls and four court ladies between 2pm and 5pm.

Prizes include £50 cash for the queen and £25 for the runner up. All will receive a goodie bag on the day of the carnival plus all dresses will be provided.

Pill Carnival is a highlight of the summer calender, and traditionally starts on Alexandra Road, before continuing into Commercial Road, heading to Cardiff Road, and finishing in Mendalgief Road.

After the parade, celebrations continue on the fields by the Pill Mill centre, where there is live music and DJs, a fun fair, food from all over the world, bouncy castles, dancing, and face painting.

Organisers are also calling on anyone wishing to run a float to make an application now, as well as walking entrants, jazz bands, cheer leaders and food vendors.

The carnival takes place on on August 27.
