A GAMES area blighted by issues is to close again for further works.

The Afon Village Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), in Rogerstone, was closed back in February to undergo noise-proofing works costing £86,000, before opening on May 8.

The council has said the work will, following a number of complaints, “upgrade the facility and provide noise insulation all the way around the MUGA to address nuisance complains and reduce noise levels to an acceptable level”.

But it has closed again today, for a final phase of works to be carried out.

A spokeswoman from Newport City Council said: "A multi-use games area (MUGA) near the Rivermead Centre is being closed for a short period from Monday, May 21 while resurfacing and line marking is carried out.

"It is expected to re-open on Friday, May 25.

"This work could not be done at the same time as the noise insulation scheme because it needs to be undertaken while there is a consistent period of warm weather."

Residents have again expressed dismay at the situation.

Resident Rob Blake said: "They have only just opened it.

"It is ridiculous that it is closing again."

Another resident, Sian James, added: "I hope one the works are finished that will be it.

"The MUGA is popular and we do not want it closed.

"This is the third time that they have closed it."

Ward councillor Chris Evans said: "Let's be honest, you would laugh if it was not for the fact that our kids will be unable to play yet again.

"All residents want is for their kids to safely play at accessible times. Is that too much to ask?"

Newport City Council previously spent £59,000 on the site, as the Argus reported, but only for legal proceedings to be filed against the local authority alleging statutory noise nuisance.

The proceedings were later adjourned pending the outcome of the current round of works.
