PEOPLE who helped NHS staff get to work during the snow have won a Pride of Gwent Award.

Members of the Bonkas 4x4 club for off road drivers came together during the heavy snow to help doctors, nurses and NHS staff get to work.

For their hard work the group won the Pride of Gwent Good Samaritan Award.

Club member Andy Griffiths was one of those helping in Gwent. He said: “The 4x4 has all terrain tyres so you can pretty much cope with anything.

"I have a seven seater so it would be full of doctors and nurses, getting them to work and back again at the end of their shift.”

Kim Ovenstone took charge of the Facebook page where people were requesting to be taken to work.

She said: “I put an advert on Facebook to say my home was open to nurses that couldn’t get home, so I had nurses coming to me.

“Then someone tagged me on the page and I could see drivers going to different places, so I tried to coordinate things and that meant more people would be picked up in one place and dropped to the hospital, it just meant the drivers weren’t doing the same route more than once.

“There was hundreds of people and one little boy we took to hospital and if we hadn’t have taken him it could have been fatal.”

For their amazing work they will receive an award at the Pride of Gwent awards ceremony, which is being held on Friday afternoon at the Coldra Court Hotel.

At the event the overall Pride of Gwent winner for 2018 will be announced.
