A FUNDING boost of £1.2 billion is heading to Wales, following Prime Minister Theresa May's announcement today of a long term injection of cash for the NHS.
And with health a devolved matter in Wales, Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns is urging Welsh Government health secretary Vaughan Gething to secure an agreement from First Minister Carwyn Jones that the money will be used to improve health services in Wales.
An extra £20bn a year will be invested in the NHS UK-wide up to 2023/24, compared to today's figures.
The announcement means the Welsh Government will receive additional funding under the long-established Barnett formula, that will be worth £1.2bn in real terms by 2023/24.
“As a result of the Prime Minister’s significant new investment in the NHS, it means a £1.2 billion funding boost from the UK Government," said Mr Cairns.
“In the NHS’s 70th year, I strongly urge the Welsh Government to spend this extra money strategically to deliver better health outcomes in Wales.
“Our NHS is hugely valued by people in Wales, but we have not seen better outcomes for patients. This additional UK Government investment in Wales can make a real difference for people living in Wales.”
The extra funding announced today comes on top of changes to visas to allow the NHS to recruit more doctors and nurses from overseas.
