A TORFAEN teenager who dropped out of college has successfully completed an optical apprenticeship.

Chloe Hughes, from Pontnewydd left her college course to start working for Specsavers in Cwmbran.

The 18-year-old said: “I wasn’t sure college was for me and when I left felt at a loss about what to do next.

“As soon as I started my apprenticeship the Specsavers team alleviated my fears and made sure I was supported throughout.

“I would love to become a dispensing optician down the line and - with my colleagues’ help - I feel it’s something I can achieve.”

Her training was anticipated to take a year, but Ms Hughes has achieved her aim in just 9 months.

She has received training in lab work, office work, spectacle collection, registering and dealing with customers.

The teenager has also completed her varifocal training, allowing her to advise customers on the best frames for their eyesight.

Director at Cwmbran Specsavers, Mark Edwards, said: “Chloe came to us unsure whether an optical career was for her, but she is a good fit for the job. She has shown maturity beyond her years and I have no doubt she will have a bright future in our store.”
