Three vehicles were involved in the crash. One of the drivers suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. 

A man has been arrested on supicion of dangerous driving causing death. 

A Gwent Police spokesman said: 

"At approximately 4.35pm on Thursday, 21st June 2018, we were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on the M4 Eastbound carriageway, between junctions 29 and 28.

"A red Honda 4x4, black Perodua and silver Audi A6 were involved in the collision. The male driver of the Perodua suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. 

"A 60-year-old man from Buckinghamshire, who was driving the Honda vehicle, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody at this time.

"Specialist officers are supporting the family of the deceased.

"Investigations are ongoing into the incident. Officers would be particularly interested in hearing for motorists with dash cam footage of the incident."

Any witnesses are asked to contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting log 358 of 21/6/18.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service has confirmed two people were taken to the Heath Hospital in Cardiff, one of whom was transported by air ambulance.

HIGHWAYS England has confirmed both sides of the M4 were earlier closed while the air ambulance attended.

THE eastbound carriageway remains closed. Gwent Police has released this statement.

"Gwent Police are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision on the M4 Junction J29 Eastbound. The road is currently closed for investigation.

"There is a diversion in place at M4 J30. Westbound carriageways are now open and traffic is flowing.

"Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 358 21/6/18. This appeal includes the request for DASH Cam footage prior to the incident and at the time."

THE M4 eastbound has been closed between J28 (Tredegar Park) and J30 (Cardiff Gate) following an accident involving three vehicles.

The accident happened near J29 (Castleton).

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed they are at the scene.

The M4 westbound, which was reported as being shut, has now reopened and traffic is said to be flowing past the scene of the accident.

A detour is in operation via the A48, but a large amount of trapped traffic is currently being released past the scene.

South Wales Argus:

A South Wales Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed five emergency vehicles were in attendance at the scene, including Helimed (air ambulance) vehicles.

Heavy traffic has also been reported westbound with congestion as far back as the Severn Bridge due to tonight's Ed Sheeran concert in Cardiff.
