WALES' biggest carnival is back for the August Bank Holiday - and there's an appeal to help bring extra 'wow' to the popular city event.

Residents, groups, businesses and organisations from across Newport are being asked to step forward and join Pill's carnival parade - taking place on Monday, August 27.

Thousands flock to the carnival each year to watch colourful floats, bands and costume characters walk from Newport Dock gates, along Alexander Road, Commercial Road and Cardiff Road before finishing near the Millennium playing fields where there will be a fair.

Ann Barton, of the Pill Carnival Committee, said: "We want people from all over Newport to join the carnival, any club, organisation or group can take part.

"Pill is such a multi-cultural area and we would like to see groups of people from across the city represented, to show their culture to the city."

Pill carnival is organised by a group of volunteers yet thousands line the street to see the parade and enjoy the fun fair after. The committee would like to make the parade bigger and better than ever.

Floats will line up at the Mission to Seafarers near Newport Dock gates where mayor of Newport Councillor Malcolm Linton, resident Omar Ali and South Wales Argus content editor Sarah Wigmore will act as judges.

First prize for the best float is £100 with £75 and £25 prizes for second and third place. Judging will take place at 12.30pm before the parade starts at 1pm.

On the Millennium field will be a fun fair, stalls, bouncy castle, live music and food from all over the world.
