To commemorate the life and legacy of the founder of the National Health Service, Aneurin Bevan, his birthplace of Tredegar will be holding a week-long series of events in his honour, writes Alex Swift.
Celebrations will range from live music, to walks through the countryside, to presentations and exhibitions on Bevan and the 1945 post-war Labour government, under which he served.
Commenting on the importance and significance of holding these events, Tredegar’s mayor, Cllr Hayden Trollope, said: “Tredegar is the home of the NHS and Nye Bevan. We are proud to present the first Bevan festival week. Organised by Tredegar town council, it celebrates our favourite son and Wales’ greatest hero, Nye Bevan’’
Commencing on Sunday, June 24 with a traditional band concert in Bedwellty Park, the event will run seven days until Sunday, July 1.
Introducing a political edge to the celebrations will be a question time event in which representatives from a range of political parties will be answering questions from members of the local community, as well as guest talks from assembly members and the Bevan foundation.
On the final day of the festival, there will be a march starting from Bevans former home in Charles Street and ending in Bedwellty Park. Throughout the day, there will be live entertainment, competitions and a Beer Garden Party and barbecue at the Cambrian pub.
