PLANS have been submitted to the local authority to build a shisha bar in the Pill area of Newport.
The planning application submitted by Lounge 23 Ltd seeks permission to change the use of the former retail building in Commercial Road and build a rear extension.
Planning documents show 57 seating booths inside the existing building and proposed extension, while the report says the bar will hold up to 35 people.
The extension would feature an open-air area with “ventilation zones”.
A design and access statement submitted by the applicants says: “The location and premises will be the first of its kind within the Newport area.
“In the Arab world hookah pipes are used to smoke flavoured tobacco which is passed through water to cool and filter it.
“This forms an important part of the culture and tradition of many residents.”
According to the application there will be no amplified music at the bar, with the applicants “adamant that the amenity of the residents is to be respected at all times.”
