VISITORS flocked to Caldicot Castle on the weekend to enjoy a carnival day under glorious sunshine.

Following the traditional parade through the town on Sunday (June 24), there was plenty on offer in the castle grounds including pony rides and a funfair.

Pauline Haywood, secretary of Caldicot Events Committee, said: "It's been absolutely fabulous and the weather has been brilliant.

"We've had lots of floats and walking groups in the parade, and more stalls than ever."

Mrs Haywood gave special thanks to Rachel Grumbach, who she said had worked hard to encourage people and traders to take part.

Leading the carnival parade through the town were a samba band and newly-crowned carnival king and queen, George Lee and Isabelle Denby.

Town mayor Oliver Edwards had the tough job of judging the parade entrants, choosing Sudbrook Girls' Football Team as the winner in the 'best float' category, with Caerwent's Coach and Horses as runners-up. A special prize went to the Alice In Wonderland entrant.

In the 'best walking group' category, Caldicot Rugby Club under-11s came first, with GKR Karate's group runners-up. A special prize went to the Magic group.

"It was very hard to judge a winner due to the high standard", Cllr Edwards said.

"It's fantastic to see so many people supporting local events in the community."
