PLANS for what a new footbridge will look like were revealed this week and people took to online to air their views.

An artist’s impression of how the new bridge to replace Devon Place subway is to go before planners.

The new footbridge gave designers technical and structural challenges to connect Devon Place with Queensway.

The design has been submitted on behalf of Newport City Council after Welsh Government agreed financial support for the initial stage of the project.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “The planning application will be made public on the council’s website and any comments will be welcome.”

Here is what you had to say about it online:

"I look forward to my first walk over it in 2025 if I'm lucky."

portman

"I have walked under many underpasses in Cardiff, and felt safe.

This is an illogical solution to the problem .

The real problem is the low life who prey on passers by.

I cannot wait to move away.

Let's hope the Bristol purchasers currently snapping up property here, have a positive effect on the town."

FrannieB

"The High Street populated by beggars , the area by the bus terminus populated by violent slackjaws, police forced to obtain exclusion orders for town centre streets, taxi and bus drivers refusing to travel through whole estates for fear of a storm of stones hurled at their vehicles, people shouting foul abuse at each other up and down the High street and arsonists burning out two city centre buildings."

westender

"I don't see what the fuss is about. It's pretty much a standard footbridge."

Frigid Frog

"This is a waste of money there is a road/footbridge at the top of the station to cross already by Tunnel Terrace."

mervynjames224

"A transporter bridge, railway bridges, footbridges and various traffic bridges . My We do like our bridges in Newport . Exciting times ahead"

The Justice League

"This is a positive thing - suck it up. Just hope it happens sooner rather than later as I'm getting tired of seeing artist impressions (which would have cost the taxpayer money to produce) rather than the real thing."

Nice One

"This seems vastly over-engineered.

Why not modify the two towers which supported the old station footbridge to carry a new bridge?

If the new bridge could be extended over Queensway to Cambrian Road, it would eliminate the need for people to cross the dual carriageway to reach the city centre."

pwharley27

"Its an improvement but shame it doesnt go across the dual carriageway as well. The original subway took people directly into Cambrian Road avoiding the need to cross roads. The current crossing is constantly stopping the traffic."

devonplace

"I don't like the green, the bridge is fine and the wheelchair access via spiral mimics the new main entrance. But if the new bridge was rendered in similar coloured materials, in my opinion, it might fit in and not look like an afterthought."

Martyn Butler

"The Queen will be gutted that the subway she opened is going to be replaced by a bridge"

Goat Man

"It would make better sense to have to stretch to Cambrian Road which would negate the need for the traffic lights at that end. Also the lights opposite the front entrance to the station are awful - it's dangerous trying to cross there because people basically walk in front of you atop the curb or obscure vision with oversized umbrellas but that's another rant in itself. Speaking of rants then how about Newport Train Station expand to more than three barriers at the front and rear entrance?"
