THIRTY anniversaries, ranging from the first traffic lights to be installed anywhere in the world to women's suffrage and Lego bricks taking their current form will be celebrated in flowers at a festival in Abergavenny this weekend [June 29- July 3].

Displays for the Stepping Through Time festival, being created by members of Abergavenny Flower Arrangement Society and others, will mark a number of important anniversaries, both nationally and locally.

Among them are:

The 100th anniversary of some women getting the vote;

70 years of the NHS

100 years since the formation of the RAF

The end of the First World War

50 years of Abergavenny twinning with Ostringen in Germany and 30 years of its twinning with Beaupreau in France

The 70th birthday of The Prince of Wales, patron of the St Mary's Priory Development Trust

The 150th anniversary of the installation of the world's first traffic lights - gas-powered semaphore-type signals outside the Houses of Parliament. The signals didn't last long as they exploded a month later, injuring their policeman operator.

Lego bricks as we know them first put on sale 60 years ago

The 20th anniversary of Abergavenny Food Festival.

70 years of Walkers Crisps

Nelson's Column being designed 180 years ago

Canon Mark Soady, Vicar of Abergavenny, said; "With so many anniversaries, we decided to celebrate them all together in this spectacular display of flowers. It'll be fascinating to see how they will be represented."
