SOUTH East Wales finished fifth of eight teams at the Welsh Schools Athletics Championships in Cardiff, but there were a number of excellent performances from the region’s youngsters.

Cardiff & Vale won the event ahead of Dyfed and Afan Nedd Tawe, with Glamorgan Valleys fourth, Eryri sixth, Powys seventh and North East Wales eighth.

While the overall crown eluded them, South East Wales won their fair share of medals – and it was the girls who shone brightest.

Islwyn High’s Caitlyn Mapps picked up one gold (long jump) and two silver medals (80m hurdles, 4x100m relay) in the middle girls’ category.

She secured her Welsh title by the narrowest of margins, outjumping Grace Morgan by just one centimetre.

Shireen Balouch, of St Joseph’s, celebrated gold and bronze in the senior girls’ 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles respectively.

Anwen Gammon (Rougemont) and Gwennan Lewis were crowned senior girls’ 3000m and shot put champions respectively.

In the middle girls’ section, Risca’s Amy Jenkins won the high jump and Caerleon’s Maddison Hammer the pole vault.

And Tillie Westwood (Monmouth Comprehensive) and Antonia Dawes (Monmouth School for Girls) captured junior girls’ javelin and 300m gold respectively.

Doing it for the boys was Newbridge’s Dylan Bevan, gold medallist in the middle boys’ shot put.

A standout performer was Amelia Fettis (Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed) who won junior girls’ shot put silver and discus bronze.
