WOMEN born in the 1950s who have been affected by increases to the state pension age are being invited to a campaign meeting hosted by a Newport MP.

About 9,000 women in Newport are believed to have been affected by changes, which mean they will have to work longer before being able to claim their pensions, by the UK Government.

And Newport East MP Jessica Morden, along with the city's AMs John Griffiths and Jayne Bryant, will host a campaign meeting on the issue at St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church Hall in Cromwell Road on Saturday, July 14. Among guest speakers will be Swansea East MP and Welsh Labour deputy leader Carolyn Harris, who is also chairwoman of Parliament's cross-party group on the issue.

Ms Morden said: “I’d highly encourage anybody who thinks they may be affected by these changes to come along to meet with other campaigners and discuss how we can move this campaign forwards. It’s vitally important that we continue to put pressure on the government to correct this injustice.”

The event will begin at 10am.
