THERE is "no indication" immigration officers were at fault during an incident at a Newport car wash in which a Sudanese man died, the organisation investigating the case has said.

Mustafa Dawood, who was 23, died at the Shaftesbury car wash on Albany Street, Newport, on Saturday, June 30.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is investigating the death, has said Mr Dawood was working at the car wash and climbed onto the roof of an adjoining factory when uniformed immigration officers arrived, before falling from a height.

And, in a letter to Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Sayed, who raised questions about the case in the Assembly earlier this month, the organisation's director for Wales Catrin Evans said: "There is currently no indication that anyone serving with Immigration Enforcement may have breached the standards of professional behaviour.

"Our investigation is in its early stages and the status of the investigation can change as we gather further evidence."

Mr Dawood, who came to the UK in 2015, first living in Southampton area before moving to Newport, was taken to Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales following the fall, where he was pronounced dead. His family in Sudan have been informed.

The IOPC has issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident to contact them on 0800 029 4689 or email shaftesburycarwashdsi@policeconduct.gov.uk
