LAST week we reported Newport's Conservative group had raised concerns over the opening hours of the Household Waste Recycling Centre, in Docks Way.

The group has said the current hours - 7.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday - are not long enough, and traffic queues are causing "absolute carnage" on the Southern Distributor Road (SDR).

Here's what you said about the issue on our website.

It's a sign of the times and they will have to change opening times - In this day of recycling the council should promote it.

There's no such thing as a free tip. I think there's two issues:

a) the access gate onto the roundabout blocks traffic on the SDR - it needs a long dedicated slip road. You get a queue at New Inn tip at peak times but it doesn't impact general traffic flow.

b) Public opening times need to reflect when people can get there. Weekdays before 9am and after 5pm plus weekends. The tip could close, say, Monday every week to fund the extended hours.

National Geographic

How many other cities would allow a main thoroughfare to be blocked because of a queue for the tip?

It's no wonder people don't visit the city if they have to queue on a main road and then realise it was because people were queuing for the tip.

Jayy

Why don't they just juggle the opening and closing times? Rather than a 7.30am opening Monday to Friday change it to 9am. This would free up 7.5 hrs, this could then be split across the weekend to extend opening hours i.e. 8am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Doing this could enable the tip to open until 5pm Mon to Fri.

Why not try something even more radical like staggering the hours of those who work there so that some go in an hour later and keep the site open for an hour longer?? Zero cost solution.

rob23martin

Opening on bank holidays would be good idea too. We tend to do more gardening and diy on bank holidays so I would have thought others are the same.

newportjones

Yes, lots of people like to do things on Bank Holidays, including council workers.

The Monmouthshire Household Waste Recycling Centres are open seven days a week from 8am to 5:50pm.

despicableme

Monmouthshire sites are run by a private company, Veolia.

Newport is council run and they won't pay the wages to keep the site open.

dr9

It costs more to clear the dumped rubbish on the road sides then leave the tip open longer hours. Newport would save money in the long run.

Mrsgab56

Are you all willing to pay the extra costs involved ? Or should the staff work extra hours for free?

Ringland Boy

I do not think that opening times are the answer, it is just the sheer volume of people wanting to get rid of their rubbish. Perhaps opening a site on the east of the city would be the answer.

southsea

I used to work down near there and Saturday and Sunday mornings were complete chaos. People stopping on the roundabout to go into the tip, blocking the whole junction outside the tip.

I've got a cough

A live webcam of the traffic entering the tip would be useful, at least you could check on the traffic situation before you leave home.

ZombieWalker

The traffic management is awful, once entering the gates the traffic could flow around the site, moving the traffic out of the highway. It would be better if there ware also more skips available to customers. This would enable move vehicles to be processed and again remove the traffic wait time.

Crazydad

Sticking to the times would be a good idea, been to drop off several times only to find them closed, Checked the web site and they should have been open. You email a complaint and get fobbed off!

psycosally

If the personnel knew what they we're doing they could organize the traffic better instead of being more interested what's being offloaded.

As an ex-copper it's nice to see the Tories having another pop at the police after cutting their numbers to the bone.

Worth remembering the next time one of our officers gets beaten up, stabbed, shot or killed in the line of duty.

JiggyWivIt

Carnage? Really? Has anyone looked that up? It does not mean "inconvenient queue."

davidcp

I hate tips, they are a load of rubbish.
