GERAINT Thomas will be back in his home city of Cardiff this evening, the first time since winning the Tour de France.

Thousands of people are expected to greet the 32-year-old outside Cardiff Castle, from 5pm to 5.30pm.

Mr Thomas will first be congratulated by First Minister Carwyn Jones at the Senedd at 4.25pm, where he will make a short public appearance at the Senedd steps shortly after.

People are welcome to St Marys Street to watch Mr Thomas cycle to the castle before addressing the crowds.

Speaking ahead of the event, he said: “I’ve been blown away by the support since the Tour de France - from everyone, but especially the Welsh public.

"I can’t wait to head back to Cardiff on Thursday for the homecoming. It’s such an incredible honour and I’m so grateful to everyone involved in helping put this event on.”

Mr Jones said: “Wales is a proud sporting nation and watching Geraint on the podium, holding the Welsh flag high above his head, was a stand-out moment in our sporting history.
