STRIKER Mark Harris is determined to continue to impress the Newport County AFC fans after earning a standing ovation for his debut display against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

The 19-year-old, who is on loan from Cardiff City, was delighted to receive the acclaim of the County fans when he was substituted on the hour.

Harris helped the Exiles to a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra in League Two and he’ll be out to impress again if he gets the opportunity in tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup tie at Cambridge United.

“Getting the first win of the season in the first home game is everything for us,” he told iFollow Exiles. “It can push us on now and give us confidence.”

Asked about the ovation from the fans, Harris said: “That’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had in football, to be honest.

“Coming off and seeing all the fans on their feet clapping me for my performance was a very good feeling.

“I felt a little bit leggy but still that I could do more for the team, but it was the gaffer’s call and as long as we get the three points in the end I’m happy.”

Harris played alongside last season’s top scorer Padraig Amond, who headed the only goal of the game, and he is keen to learn from the experienced Irishman.

“I really enjoyed playing alongside Padraig Amond,” said the teenager.

“He helped me along with the game and gave me some tips before the game because he’s obviously very experienced in this league.

“He basically told me to work hard and make sure I use my body to the maximum.

“He told me it’s a tough league with tough defenders, so always make sure that you’re 100 per cent focused and using your body well.”

On tomorrow night’s cup clash, Harris added: “There’s no easy game in any cup competition. Everyone wants to win it, so it will be a tough game, but if we go there with the same attitude we feel we can get the win easy.”

County beat Cambridge in the FA Cup and home and away in the league last season.

“I’m sure Cambridge will use that as motivation," said Harris. "We’ll be up for that fightback.”
