NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn says he’d love to take on local rivals Cardiff City at Rodney Parade in the next round of the Carabao Cup.

County crushed Cambridge United 4-1 at the Abbey Stadium last night thanks to two goals from Padraig Amond and one each for Jamille Matt and substitute Antoine Semenyo.

Tomorrow night’s second-round draw sees the inclusion of the 13 Premier League clubs who are not competing in European competitions, alongside Championship sides Stoke City and Swansea City.

The draw is unseeded but will be regionalised into north and south sections and Flynn would welcome a clash with the Bluebirds.

“Knowing us, we’ll probably get the one that furthest away again,” joked the Exiles boss.

“It would be brilliant to have a game against Cardiff. I don’t fancy Swansea too much – we played them in pre-season.

“I just want to get a home draw at Rodney Parade.”

Whoever County come up against they will be confident of giving them a game if they can repeat their dominant display at Cambridge.

“I thought it was an absolutely outstanding performance – professional, clinical and ruthless, which I’ve been asking for,” said Flynn.

“The finishing was first class. I think we could have had a couple more but that second goal we scored was probably the best we’ve scored under my reign and definitely a few others.”

Amond’s second concluded a move that involved nine players and 14 passes before he slotted confidently past U’s goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov.

“It was an outstanding goal, unbelievable. Fraser Franks has come out of it looking like Franz Beckenbauer!

“He started the move off and it was an unbelievable bit of football. Thankfully they managed to finish it off at the other end. It was a great finish from Padraig.

“He should have seven or eight goals by now but I’m kind of glad he hasn’t because I’m trying to keep hold of him!

“He’s an outstanding professional and I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Flynn was also delighted that Matt and Semenyo got off the mark following their summer arrivals.

“It’s massive for Jamille,” he said. “I thought he was a handful. He was a pain for their defence, he was awkward, he linked the play and the first goal came from him.

“He could have had a second one but the goal will boost his confidence so it was a good night.

“And I’m absolutely buzzing for Antoine. It’s his first League goal. He’s as strong as an ox, he’s hard working, he’s humble and he wants to learn.

“He’s got to keep doing that day in and day out and he’ll have a very bright future.”
