CHANGES are being proposed to a multi-million shopping scheme because it will now contain two major retailers.

Debenhams are already officially lined up for the £200 million Friars Walk in Newport city centre.

It is believed Marks and Spencer, presently in Commercial Street, will move into the second large anchor store but a spokeswoman for the company refused to comment on "rumour and speculation".

Permission for the Modus Corovest development was given in February but the city council's planning committee will decide on "reserved matters" next week.

These relate to design, external appearance and landscaping.

An officers' report explains it is an amended scheme mainly because of the additional anchor store.

This will require the amalgamation of units at the northern end of the site and development over part of the proposed new bus station.

A basement car park will be increased from 160 spaces to 295 to cater for the shoppers visiting the second anchor store.

Other changes include an extra three residential units to take the total to 243.

Further information will be given to the committee about concerns raised by Newport Access Group who represent disabled people.

At the same meeting next Monday, councillors will also consider a separate application relating to the hotel being built as part of the development.

It is being proposed to amend part of the building's design and increase the number of rooms from 118 to 96.

Friars Walk will have restaurants and a cinema as well as shops, apartments and 1,400 space car park.

One controversial aspect of the scheme is the threat to the Chartist mural in the tunnel, due to be demolished, between John Frost Square and Upper Dock Street.

Modus Corovest cannot begin development until it a programme for the provision of public art is approved.

"increase the number of rooms from 118 to 96." - don't you love Argus maths?

As for the controversy over the chartist mural, it is only controversial to a very tiny vocal minority...

Owain, Have you ever thought that it could just a typing error? We all make mistakes. :-)

This is a published medium. I know people make mistakes, but NEWS sources must ensure they get their facts right. You wouldn't be so forgiving if a story about you was so sloppy with accuracy.

Maybe Danielle, but if it had been my dosage of important medicines at a hospital and that is what the doctor wrote down I would be very concerned. So is the story that the number of rooms will be increased or decreased?

good point chris - are they increasing or decreasing the rooms Argus?

If you read the actual planning committee report on newport.gov.uk (that this story is entirely lifted from) you will see that the number of rooms is being increased.

If we are on about the Kingsway Shopping Centre then it makes no real difference as because at the end of the day it is so bright and warm in there then nobody will go there anyway. Unless they are wearing sunglasses.

I havent a clue what you are on about and neither do you obviously. Are you getting your facts from something you just made up?

The ceiling in the Kingsway is very similar to that in St Davids Centre and that doesn't seem to stop people going in

The article relates to Friars Walk which is a different development although I do agree that something needs to be done about the glass roof. I was walking through there only the other day and my eyes were streaming due to the starkness and brightness. Dont get me wrong - the new look is a great improvement but I think something does need to be done about the glass roof panels - maybe frosting them or similar may help.

JS - yes the ceiling is similar but not the same, i think st davids is frosted? correct me if im wrong.
