POLICE capes flew back into action as officers wore them to escort school children through the city centre.

Officers PC Richard Thomas and PC Simon Jenkins wore the capes to to help walk 150 Pillgwenlly Junior school children to City cinema on Bridge Street.

The trip is an annual funday treat paid for by the Newport Lions Club.

PC Thomas said: "It was a bit of Christmas fun for the schoolchildren, but we had lots of positive comments from lots of people we passed."

The police capes, last issued 20 years ago, proved popular with the older generation. PC Thomas said: "Many older people in the city centre told us it was nice to see officers wearing capes."

President of the Newport Lions club, Geoffrey Stevens said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed their trip and it was a nice touch for the police schools officers to wear their old capes."

PC Jenkins added: "The capes certainly got people talking - and they kept us warm while walking on a very cold day."

Despite the popularity of the capes, the force have no current plans to bring them back as standard issue.

Never mind escorting kids across town, what about solving the Jack the Ripper case?

I saw them when they where escorting the children, they did look a bit warmer, and the kids seemed to like the Bobbies and the attention they recieved from them and the public! And if they got a spare one? eh? Top Shop has run out!

"Caped crusaders" -nice 'public friendly' idea, but more like "Keystone cops" in 'crime dectection' reality.

they were actually hiding the over weight problem they have.

I saw these bobbies with the kiddies while on my way to work.

It looked like a fantastic idea to me. The officer's seemed to be enjoying themselves and the kiddies were all enjoying the attention - surely this kind of thing is to be encouraged.

The effect that this kind of event has on kids should never be underestimated. I can still remember policeman called PC Rogers who used to visit us at Ringland Infants and Junior School about 20 years ago, he occasionally brough along a K9 unit too, all of us as kids were always excited to see him.

A wonderful public relations exercise by PC Plod, but it doesn’t alter the fact that they are out there to lock you up if your “naughty”, and quite rightly so, so lets have less of the Caped Crusader, or Jolly Bobby nonsense.
