PUPILS at a Newport school celebrated a special birthday by releasing balloons today.

Each of the 285 balloons released by children at St Julians Junior to mark the school's 55th birthday was biodegradable.

To add to their green credentials, even the tags were made to break down so they would not litter the environment.

Head teacher David Rees explained there was a prize for the pupil whose balloon went the furthest.

St Julians Junior has had much to celebrate this year.

In February, an Estyn team awarded the school six top grade ones and one grade two in its inspection report and described it as a good school with many outstanding features.
