HUNDREDS of people took part in this year's In the Pink canal walk in aid of breast cancer research.

Again organised by Ebbw Vale's Liz Sullivan, the seventh annual walk was held in bright sunshine in contrast to last year's rain.

This year's event also had its own theme tune - It Will Happen - a song written and performed by Sally-Ann Evans.

Sally-Ann, who sings all the parts and plays all the instruments apart from the guitar on the recorded version, sang live as balloons were released at the festival in Llangynidr following the walks.

Its message was based on a comment by an oncologist that there would one day be a cure for breast cancer.

More than 100 people left Goyre Wharf this morning on one of the four routes.

Among those taking part were a group of trainees and instructors from from the RAF's technical school at St Athan.

Sgt Mark Jones, who originally came from Pengam, explained part of their training was to get involved in the local community.

"My sister is dealing with cancer at the moment and this seemed appropriate."

It was the second 20-mile walk for the group over the weekend.

Mrs Sullivan, who began organising the event with friends after having breast cancer, said another 300 people were due to leave from Govilon, 800 from Brecon and 200 from Talybont.

Mrs Sullivan hoped they would raise £100,000 from this year's walk.

She never thought it would take off in the way it has when it started. "We thought we would raise about £2,000."

They all finished in Llangynidr to enjoy the party where there was live music, food, and entertainment for the children.
