A TEENAGER yesterday admitted his part in an assault where a man was shot more than ten times with a BB gun.

Luke Roberts, 18, of St Edwards Street, Baneswell, admitted wounding with intent and possessing an airgun adapted for use with a self-contained gas cartridge.

Roberts was yesterday remanded in custody after the hearing at Newport Crown Court.

The attack on Jamie Weetch, 19, of Mount Pleasant Terrace, Pontywaun, happened on March 7 this year.

That night, Mr Weetch and a friend drove to see his cousin at New Park Road, Crosskeys.

On arriving, Mr Weetch noticed a car pull up behind him.

He says he got out of the car and suddenly felt a sharp pain in his ear.

He turned around to see what he initially thought was a real gun, then felt more stinging wounds as he was shot at close range to the face, neck and upper arm with metal ball berings from a BB gun.

Mr Weetch says he was hit more than 10 times.

One pellet was lodged in his nose and had to be surgically removed. Another landed less than an inch from his eye - narrowly avoiding blinding him.

Mr Weetch told the Argus: "I remember wiping my face and seeing the blood."

Yesterday Mr Weetch's mother, Elizabeth, spoke of her relief that her son's attacker had admitted his guilt.

"I'm really pleased and Jamie is glad justice is being done."

The terrifying attack came just two years after Roberts was convicted of a separate attack on Mr Weetch.

In 2006, he admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, in an attack where the judge said he "brandished a kitchen knife in the street".

Mr Weetch was left covered in blood, with a two centimetre slash in his jugular.

Roberts was given an 18 month supervision order for that attack.
