SUPERMARKET giants Tesco submitted plans to Caerphilly council for the superstore set to be built in Risca.

The proposed 80,000 sq ft Tesco Extra, is set to be built on the old foundry site in Newport Road.

This would be the fourth supermarket in the area along with Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl and the store would be 20,000 sq ft larger than the Tesco Extra in Cardiff Road, Newport.

A public exhibition was held in April, allowing members of the public to have a say on the development.

A spokesman for Tesco, Felix Gummer, said: "The majority of people said they were keen for this to happen and people reflected that they had to go away to shop elsewhere and they're generally excited about it."

At least 500 jobs are set to be created should plans go ahead.

Assistant manager at the Commercial Inn, Risca, Chris Norman, 21, said he had mixed feelings about the development: "Risca is quite run down, it's an old town and something like that has got to help because there's a lot of unemployment."

He added: "I've got lots of friends with shops like butchers and I feel sorry for them because they can't compete with Tesco prices. I'd say on the whole it will be a positive thing as long as the jobs go to local people."

Mr Gummer, added: "There are no large retailers near the high street, what we've found is nearly everyone is going out to do their main food shopping, we want to bring the shop to them."

That's absolute rubbish! I shop in Tesco's on a monthly basis for certain items - but I have learn't that meat purcahsed from local butchers (I personally use A D Turner in Npt market - awesome quality & service) not only costs less than the supermarkets but the quality is far FAR superior!

It's just a case of these businesses being a little more pro-active with their approach to marketing. The only real competition I see is that the Spar will lose custom.

I disagree, if you think that the big Supermarkets don't have an affect on the high street butcher you need to speak to my friend. His family run one of the Risca butchers shops and since the opening of Morrisons, Aldi etc he has seen a drop in trade. With the current price war going on with the big supermarket chains they cannot compete with the prices. I know you pay for the quality that the high street butcher gives you however with the current credit crunch and people trying to save as much money as possible you find that the family run butchers are getting hit.

I think the supermarket should be built, it brings competition and a greater variety of goods under one roof, something a local butcher can't do. Those who prefer to shop at local stores will continue to do so.

Price up 4 little chicken breasts in tesco's then price up 4 in a butchers - and Ill put money on it that the butchers are cheaper - seriously the tide is turning its a case of these businesses letting customers know this - not wasting their time creating petitions and the like - that time could be used more constructively to convey this message.

Buy 4 chicken breast from Tesco and you get 4 lumps of meat with no flavour and pumped full of water. At least with a butcher you get quality.

The large corporate bullies just see off all competition with their underhand tactics and where is the competition then?
Large supermarkets actually have a negative effect on jobs as their size means they employ fewer people than several independent businesses. For facts on this and various unscrupulous practices they use visit:- www.tescopoly.org.uk

You may find you are more informed and change your views then.

If you want good meat go to a butcher, but in many areas they have gone.Councils don"t help as they make it hard to park in many traditional shopping areas and supermarkets have car parks that are free.Cwmbran has got the right idea, in fact I use the butchers (willis) I think it is called.

Howards Butchers is very very good. Family run, friendly atmosphere and excellent produce. Their Welsh Faggots are the best for miles around.

Quite right. The big stores give a perception of cheapness, beacause they are always telling us that they are cheaper.
They put a few things on offer as bait, then reel every one in.
You can often get better deals elsewhere, but you are brainwashed by the massive advertising these companies produce.

They also don't pay a 'living wage', so, as usual, most of the employees are propped up by the taxpayer and don't contribute anything towards running the country.

its just what Risca need. Tesco has EVERYTHING under 1 roof. Its not as if Risca has alot going for it @ the moment. Tesco Extra will bring the employment factor back in to the Risca area, just what it needs to be honest.
What has everywhere else got that Risca hasn't???? YEP u guessed it TESCO..
Risca needs employment imput and Tesco know just how to do that. I have worked for a Tesco Extra, so i know the score......
I say bring on the TESCO
