HUNDREDS of people are expected to turn out next weekend as a Newport estate celebrates its 30th birthday.

The first houses in Duffryn went up in 1978 and to celebrate the 30 year landmark, the estate will host a street party.

The celebrations at Sandpiper Park begin at 12pm next Saturday and include performances from local musicians and dancers, a birds of prey demonstration, football tournament and tug-of-war.

The party will be officially launched by Newport Mayor Noel Trigg, after months of planning and organisation by the joint leadership of the Duffryn Local Partnership Board.

Children from Duffryn Infants School will demonstrate their gymnastics skills and Newport-Gwent Dragons official dance troupe Dance Katz will also be strutting their stuff.

Director of Duffryn Community Link, Helen Dearden praised everyone involved: "It truly has been partnership effort, everyone has helped out and we're extremely grateful for the sponsorship we've received."

She added: "Everyone is more than welcome to join us for a relaxing day of fun and entertainment, we have some fantastic stalls, entertainment and raffle prizes, we just hope the weather is kind to us."

The partnership board consists of Duffryn Residents and Tenants Association, Duffryn Community Link, the Housing Office, local schools, police and businesses.

Events run from 12-4 pm on a stage provided courtesy of local firm International Recifier.

Any teams wishing to enter the tug-of-war should contact Bob Barry at Duffryn Community Link on 01633 816916.
