A NEWPORT council cabinet member was arrested for failing to provide a sample in a roadside breathalyser test.

Conservative councillor Peter Davies, cabinet member for resources, and father of Monmouth MP David Davies, was stopped by police on Risca Road, on September 8, at around 8pm.

But when officers breathalysed him he was unable to provide a breath sample so was arrested.

He now faces an anxious wait for the results of a urine sample to determine whether or not he was over the legal alcohol limit.

Councillor Davies said: "I had a pint that night, but I certainly hadn't had a skinful.

"I asked the police officer why he had pulled me over and he said it was because I had hesitated and he thought he had seen me swerve a little."

But he says the reason he failed to provide a breath sample was because of the chest complaint which has plagued him for the last year.

He said: "I've suffered from this cough. I have seen the doctor and had X-rays, but I'm waiting for the results."

At Newport central police station, Cllr Davies was examined by a doctor and had to provide an alternative urine sample.

He was then bailed until October 27.

Cllr Davies said: "It is a case of waiting.

"Hopefully it won't be a problem, but you never know, as I had drunk some wine at lunchtime that day."

He has reported the incident to council leader, Matthew Evans, who is currently in America for the Ryder Cup, and to chief whip David Fouweather.

Councillor Fouweather said: "I do not condone drink driving in any way.

"However in this case we will have to wait for the due process of law, which will be by late October.

"In the meantime this is a private matter for Peter Davies."

Gwent Police were unable to comment as the Argus went to press.
