Pupils sing school dinners' praises

Monmouthshire County Council has got school children involved in encouraging pupils to eat school dinners.

The numbers have been declining for a few years and currently only 39% of youngsters eat school meals.

A competition has been launched with every primary school in the local authority area sent details. Youngsters can win a mountain bike and sports vouchers by designing a logo to promote school dinners.

Monmouthshire's school development officer Sally Gaskins said: "We want a logo or character to adopt on all publications and literature, with the aim of raising the profile of school meals.

"The design will need to reflect ideas of healthy eating and healthy lifestyles."

Monmouthshire's menus now include vegetarian options for everyone, fresh fruit, salad and chips only appear once every three weeks.
