"The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable"
Oscar Wilde.

Hi Stonebridge, I have no wish to be pedantic but the quote is:

Foxhunting, the unspeakable pursuing the inedible.

Cheers Orson.

I tried to remember this one without looking it up. Now I have...
Wikipedia gives:
...Wilde, in his 1893 play 'A Woman of No Importance', once famously referred to "the English country gentleman galloping after a fox" as "the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable."
This is also confirmed by Britannica.
So it looks like we were both wrong. ;) But near enough. :)

It's a great tradition and still very popular judging from the size of the turn-out to watch the hunt live. I doubt that anything was killed but if it was it would have been shot under the present law. Don't forget that foxes are officially vermin.

Correct first three! As for D. Taylor, what a sad existence. You could say that some criminals are vermin - would you like to mount a horse wearing a silly red coat and chase them to their deaths? I think not. Wake up and have some compassion for other living creatures.A ban is a ban and anyone flouting it should be jailed!

It's the law that says they're vermin not me. As I'm sure you well know the hunt is not allowed to hunt foxes or most other mammals with dogs. So the people riding out today were simply keeping up a tradition rather than going to kill anything. You are just spouting silly prejudices.

Oh, and I should have pointed out that so far as I know the Tredegar Hunt is law abiding and was not breaking any law by riding out today.

Nothing wrong with the red coats and the horse-riding, it's the killing the animal for fun bit that's disturbing, whether it's shot or ripped apart by dogs.

Vermin should be dealt with by an exterminator with a licence, not a borderline sociopath getting kicks and giggles.
