Abergavenny store set to open in former Woolies

A DISCOUNT store looks set to open in the former Woolworths building in Abergavenny.

B & M Retail Limited, a Blackpool-based company, is understood to be opening a branch in the town centre.

The retail unit in the high street has been vacant since the closure of Woolworths on December 27 after more than 70 years in the town.

The bargain store, which sells products ranging from patio furniture to children’s toys, has made no secret of its plan to increase its stores throughout the UK from 48 to 100 over the next five years.

The company has posted an advert for vacancies on its job website seeking a deputy manager to be located in Abergavenny.

Local estate agent Gerry Young, of Miles, Young & Co, said that the interest from B&M would be good news for the town and said there is also interest in several vacant units in the town.

“The former Motorworld unit is under offer and there is also interest in the bakery Sweetman’s, both of which are located on Frogmore Street, as well as the Heli-beds building on Baker Street,” added Mr Young.

Speculation that Marks and Spencer was looking at the former Woolworths site had been mounting but the company this week announced 1,200 job losses across the UK.

A spokeswoman for the retailer, which has a food-only store in nearby Monmouth, confirmed that the company has no interest in leasing the Abergavenny building.

“We are not interested in the building and have no current plans to open a store in Abergavenny, “ she added.

No one from B & M Retail Ltd was available to comment as the Argus went to Press last night.

Have you not heard of supply and demand? This is what we all need in these tighter financial times, so these are the kind of shops continually being opened. If they weren't successful do you really think they'd carry on popping up everywhere?

I'll tell you why there are no electronics stores. It's because it's cheaper to get these items over the internet.

There are some good quality items in this store. I recently bought items in there that were three times the amount in Woolworths.

labradoodle - the stuff in these stores are exactly the same product as from alot of other retailers (tesco, asda, argos, etc, etc) but at half the price or less - your only paying for the big names and the huge advertising bills they have. and these stores do not even resemble a pound shop - idiot!!(you said "welcome to wales - the land of the pound shop!) well f### ### to england then!

I really don't see why some people object to pound shops and discount stores so much. Alright, maybe some of their stuff isn't the very best quality in the world - but how good do you need a bag of clothes pegs to be, anyway?

The retail market is changing but local councils bury their heads in the sand and refuse to accept that fact. We have places like Newport deciding the sensible thing to do is to expand the existing shopping centre when it cannot even support the number of shops that are already there. Thats just bad planning.

The high street retail market is shrinking and will continue to shrink so welcome to the woderful world of deralict high streets . Half of Newpot will be boarded up and shut down.

What they should be looking at is small high sTreets but with a better range of High Quality stores and not endless pound stores & charity shops

Smaller but better rather then bigger and tacky
