Darfur refugees help mark Holocaust

DARFUR refugees were among attendees at a special service in Newport marking Holocaust Day.

Event organiser, Reverend Mark Soady chaplain of the University of Wales, Newport, said he felt privileged to have members of Newport’s Darfur community at the event.

He said: “We wanted to not only remember those who died under the Nazis in World War Two, but also remind everyone that hundreds of people are being killed everyday.”

Darfur asylum-seeker, 45-year-old Musa Khadir, said: “We need help in raising people’s awareness about the terrible situation in Darfur.

“We have friends and family there, but are unable to contact them. We have no idea where they are and whether they are still alive or have been killed.”

The event included a candle-lighting ceremony and took place at the University’s Caerleon campus on Tuesday.
