TESCO warned customers of their filling ststaion in Ystrad Mynach they may have been mischarged for petrol.
Some of the pumps at dispensed less fuel than they should have. This means that some customers paid a little more than they should have.
A Tesco spokesman said "We are contacting customers to apologise for our mistake and offer a refund or, if they prefer, a donation to a local charity.
"Tesco will also make sure that the total refunds and charity donations add up to more than twice as much as the original overcharges caused by the fault at the pumps.
"We would also like to offer reassurances that we have checked other sites as a precautionary measure and can confirm that this was an isolated incident."
