TESCO is set to convert a former pub in Cwmbran into a new Express store, after agreeing to comply with nearby residents’ wishes.

The company applied to make external alterations, install a new shopfront and cash machine, as well as re-configuring the existing car park on the site of the former Golden Harvest pub, Ty Gwyn Road, Greenmeadow.

Existing vehicular access would be widened to improve access and visibility and the car parking layout would accomodate 16 spaces plus two disabled spaces.

Residents living close to the site expressed concerns over traffic, parking, delivery times amongst other issues, at a public meeting chaired by Torfaen council leader Councillor Bob Wellington in January.

The plans to convert the former pub for retail use were submitted under “permitted development” rights, as planning permission was initally granted for the site in 1974 with no restrictions on its terms of use.

Greenmeadow Councillor Cath Lewis attended Tuesday’s planning committee meeting to represent residents views and said Tesco had listened to concerns and agreed to a number of changes.

Cllr Lewis said: “I raised residents’ wishes to which I am overall pleased to say Tesco had agreed to and will comply with. They do not have to comply with any of the suggestions, but are willing too in anticipation of community welcoming.”

Resident only parking signs are to be erected, along with acoustic barriers and a path for shoppers to save them walking on the road. Noise from deliveries will be monitored and the entrance will also be widened.

Cllr Lewis said: “I personally think the outcome was better than I anticipated in relation to the level of compromise.”

Tesco have also agreed to a Section 106 agreement and will continue work with Torfaen council.
