THE FRIENDS of Old Station Tintern group received a Tidy Local Communities grant of £2,500 to carry on their work improving the area.

The group have used the money, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Tidy Towns initiative, to buy benches, planters, plants, hanging baskets and tools for the Old Station.

Forming in December, the group now has around 36 volunteers working to improve the green space and facilities at the site.

Treasurer and one of the founders of the group, Sue Pickles said: “We are really pleased to have received the money. As our group is quite new it just means we can get a good start to improving the area.”

The money also adds to a grant of more than £500 from Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and £100 from Monmouthshire Youth Service which the group will use towards building a model of the railway as it was in the 1930s.
