DERELICT buildings and major routes into Newport are set for a revamp after councillors approved a £3.8million improvement scheme.
Members of Newport city council’s cabinet were asked to approve improvements to various key locations and routes into the city after the Assembly agreed to fund the works.
Council leader Matthew Evans said: “This is a good news story and, make no mistake, if we weren’t hosting the Ryder Cup next year, this funding would not have been forthcoming. This is all about providing a long-lasting legacy for the community.”
A report presented at Tuesday's meeting said the programme of physical and environmental enhancements would complement the existing regeneration scheme.
Andy Evans, head of planning and regeneration and strategic housing, said: “This sits alongside that programme and will really enhance the environment and give vibrancy to the centre itself.”
Councillor Ed Townsend, economic development and regeneration cabinet member, said: “The aim is really to improve the city and clean up neglected parts of the city.
Fortunately we have partners willing to support us. This is a great step forward.”
Attached to the report was a draft list of projects for key routes including the Coldra, Tredegar Park, the SDR and Caerleon.
City centre streets including John Frost Square, High Street and Cambrian Road were also mentioned.
Buildings featured included Lysaght Institute, the Maltings, Capitol car park, Newport Castle and Town Bridge.
The £3.8million funding has been provisionally secured from the Assembly to fund the works.
A project team will produce a detailed programme of work, together with timescales and costings, which will be reported back to cabinet for endorsement at a later date.

It ain't a good news story until we know what's going to be done, and more importantly, if we have a hope in hell of getting it done in 12 months.
