NEWPORT'S own warship will sail into the city on Friday.

The Royal Navy warship HMS Severn will arrive in the Middle Quay of the South Dock in her affiliated city of Newport.

This is part of the Armed Forces weekend which will celebrate those who have served or are serving in the military as part of a four day visit.

The ship’s company will be actively involved in civic events including a parade and city council reception on Sunday.

The Commanding Officer of the ship, Lieutenant Commander Steve Moorhouse, will host a lunch party and ship’s reception for members from groups such as the Princes Trust.

HMS Severn is usually based at Portsmouth and is a River Class Offshore Patrol Vessel built for fisheries protection duties around the UK.

She is 79m long and her twin diesel engines can propel her to a top speed of 20 knots.

The working deck of the ship is large enough to transport smaller craft such as oil spill recovery tractors and small landing craft meaning she can also be used for disaster relief, anti-pollution and rescue work.
