SWINE FLU: Newport pair 'recovering well'

TWO members of Newport family are recovering well after being treated for swine flu.

The woman and the boy were the city's first confirmed cases of the virus.

The nine-year-old boy and 26-year-old woman have been discharged from the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, after being diagnosed at the weekend.

Four other members of the family are housebound as they receive antivirals as a precaution, according to a family member.

The two people were treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital after returning from a family holiday in Ibiza.

They got back to Newport on Friday and the nine-year-old, a pupil at Duffryn Junior School, started to become ill over the weekend.

They were admitted to hospital on Sunday and the other family members were told to stay at home for five days.

The family member, who does not wish to be named, said: “They had only been to Ibiza and we thought it was just a virus. But he (the nine-year-old child) had a nasty cough and it was quite a shock when we found out it was swine flu.”

Newport City Council has liaised with the National Public Health Service for Wales which has advised that as the child has not attended school since returning from holiday, both Duffryn Junior and Infant schools should remain open as normal.

Letters were sent out to parents of all 175 pupils at Duffryn Junior School giving advice and information as a precaution.

A Newport City Council spokeswoman said letters given out show symptoms to look out for and there is more information on its website www.newport.gov.uk if anyone has concerns.

Two further cases of swine flu were confirmed in Gwent today.
