Newport teens raise £6,000 in friends' memory

A GROUP of Newport teenagers raised more than £6,000 for charity in memory of their friend who died last year.

Louis Price, 14, died on August 12 during a diving trip with his father Steve Price off Berry Head in Brixham.

Louis’ school friends raised the money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which helped search for Louis after he went missing.

This money has been shared between the Newport, Cardiff and Brixham branches of the charity.

Ryan Owen, 15, of Lundy Drive, and other friends organised non-uniform days and bucket collections to raise funds.

They also did bag packing in Tesco in Spytty Road recently and wore specially printed t-shirts with a picture of Louis on.

This bag packing event alone raised £880.

St Julian’s teacher Tracy Wynne completed the Cardiff Half Marathon last year where she raised just under £1,500 to add to the cause.

Ryan said he and several of Louis’ other friends still visit Louis’ parents every week.

He said he thought Louis would have been very pleased with their fundraising efforts.

A plaque in memory of Louis is expected to be unveiled at St Julian’s School in the next few weeks.
